“I am running for Council to apply my training, interests and experiences to Amherst’s challenges. I bring a fresh and future-oriented perspective. I look forward to serving you.” -Freke Ette

I Will Bring to the Council:

  • An appreciation for multicultural perspectives gotten from living in Nigeria, Louisiana, Texas and, now, the Pioneer Valley.

  • A recognition of the benefits of consensus-building, deliberation and balanced judgment from time as a student and teacher of political science.

  • champion of diversity, both in roles as faculty and staff, and as a volunteer with Amherst’s committee tasked with dealing with public safety.

Campaign Launch Announcement

My name is Freke Ette. Driven by a profound belief in the potential of collaboration to transform our community, I am thrilled to announce my candidacy for Town Council - District 1. I am committed to fostering a sincere culture of cooperation, compromise, and decisive action to solve critical issues: affordable housing; racial, socio-economic, and generational diversity; and investment in public and social infrastructure.

My journey from Nigeria to the United States, studying in the South, teaching political theory nationwide, and serving as a volunteer with the town, solidified my approach to politics that centers on equity, constructive discourse, and finding reasonable middle ground. My upbringing in Nigeria underscored the significance of multiculturalism, while my academic endeavors in Baton Rouge and Houston taught me about America's complex racial history, and revealed how competing ideologies invigorate politics.

These experiences fuel my passion for authentic political representation and drive for a belonging community. Currently, in my roles at the UMass and in my volunteer position with Amherst, I work with various groups striving for equity within the academia and the town.

My vision for Amherst goes beyond a laundry list of goals. It is a commitment to nurture an environment where diverse perspectives shape pragmatic solutions. We can rejuvenate our local politics and lay the groundwork for a stronger, more harmonious community. In seeking a seat on the Town Council, I bring my unique experiences and an unyielding commitment to understanding, unity, and progress. Let us collectively pave the way for a brighter future in Amherst.
